Kuwait Coins
The official currency of Kuwait is the Kuwaiti Dinar, one of the most valuable currencies in the world. This monetary system has a fascinating history and unique characteristics that distinguish it in the global numismatic landscape.
Current currency and its value
The Kuwaiti dinar is divided into 1000 fils and is represented by the code KWD. Introduced in 1961 after the country's independence, it is known for its high value against other currencies. The Central Bank of Kuwait issues banknotes in denominations of 1/4, 1/2, 1, 5, 10 and 20 dinars, while coins circulate in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 20, 50 and 100 fils.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Prior to the adoption of the dinar, Kuwait used the Gulf rupee, issued by the Indian government. An important milestone in Kuwaiti numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 1976, celebrating the 15th anniversary of independence. In addition, during the Iraqi invasion of 1990, the Kuwaiti government in exile printed a new series of banknotes to replace those that had been stolen, marking a unique chapter in the country's monetary history.
