Spanish 1 peseta coin (1966)
The 1 peseta coin, issued in 1966 by the Spanish State, was one of the most popular denominations used during the Franco regime. Minted in cupronickel, its design featured on the obverse the crowned Coat of Arms of Spain and the legend "FRANCISCO FRANCO CAUDILLO DE ESPAÑA", while the reverse showed the Francoist coat of arms surrounded by the face value of the coin "UNA PESETA".
Look at the number inside the star of the coin (year of mintage vs. year of issue).
The stars on Franco coins are important because they provide specific information about the year of mintage of the coins. The small stars with the year of mintage are usually located on both sides of the coin or around the edge. Inside these stars is engraved the specific year the coin was minted.
- Year of Issue: This is the year that appears on the obverse of the coin, usually corresponding to the year the coin design or series was approved.
- Year of mintage: This is the actual year the coin was manufactured, and is found on the small stars on the reverse or obverse of the coin.
Thus, numismatists when referring to this coin call it "1 peseta 1966 star 74" or "1 peseta 1966 star 67" for example.
