Third Republic (1990-?) Coin List

The Third Republic of Hungary was established in 1989 after the collapse of the communist regime. This period marked the beginning of a new era for the country, characterized by the transition to a multi-party democracy and a market economy. Hungarian numismatics also underwent significant changes during this era, reflecting the country's political and economic transformation.

Monetary transition and new issues

With the advent of the Third Republic, Hungary began a process of monetary reform. The Hungarian forint, which had been the official currency since 1946, was retained as the monetary unit, but underwent changes in its design and denominations. In 1992, a new series of coins was introduced, reflecting the national identity and democratic values of the country. These pieces featured historical and cultural motifs, such as the Hungarian coat of arms and prominent figures from national history. The denominations included 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 forint coins, with the particularity that the 1 and 2 forint coins were withdrawn from circulation in 2008 due to inflation.

Commemorative coins and preparation for the euro

During this period, the National Bank of Hungary also issued a number of commemorative coins to celebrate important events and historical figures. These pieces, usually minted in precious metals such as silver and gold, became coveted by both domestic and international collectors. In addition, as Hungary prepared for its eventual accession to the European Union in 2004, preparations began for a possible adoption of the euro. Although Hungary has not yet adopted the common European currency, studies and preliminary designs for future Hungarian euro coins have been undertaken. These potential designs have generated great interest among numismatists in anticipation of the day when Hungary may join the eurozone.
