Hutt River Coins

The Principality of Hutt River, an unrecognized micronation in Western Australia, had a unique monetary history from its founding in 1970 until its dissolution in 2020. Throughout its existence, Hutt River issued its own coins and banknotes, although these were not legal tender outside the micronation.

Hutt River currency

Initially, Hutt River used the Hutt River dollar, which was on par with the Australian dollar. In 1974, the Hutt River cent was introduced, with 100 cents equivalent to $1. Hutt River coins were minted in a variety of materials, including gold, silver, copper and nickel, and featured designs that celebrated the history and culture of micronation. These pieces became collectors' items for numismatists around the world.

Numismatic milestones

One of Hutt River's most significant numismatic milestones was the issuance of commemorative coins in 1977 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. In 2010, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its founding, Hutt River issued a special series of gold and silver coins. These limited issues increased collector interest and contributed to the tourism promotion of the micronation, becoming an important source of income for Hutt River until its dissolution.
