Kiribati Coins
The official currency of Kiribati is the Australian dollar, adopted after its independence in 1979. This small Pacific island country has an interesting numismatic history that reflects its colonial past and its transition to independence.
Monetary history
Prior to the adoption of the Australian dollar, Kiribati used the Gilbert and Ellice Islands pound during its period as a British protectorate. This currency was in circulation from 1937 until 1966, when it was replaced by the Gilbert and Ellice Islands dollar. This change coincided with the transition of many British territories from the pounds, shillings and pence system to the decimal system.
Numismatic Milestones
Although Kiribati does not issue its own currency for general circulation, the country has produced commemorative coins for collectors. A significant milestone was the issuance of a $1 coin in 1979 to commemorate the country's independence. In addition, Kiribati has issued several series of themed coins, including one dedicated to historic ships and another celebrating the marine wildlife of the Pacific, reflecting the nation's rich maritime heritage.
