Mali Coins
Mali' s numismatics reflect a rich monetary history dating back to pre-colonial times. From ancient forms of exchange to modern currency, Mali's monetary system has undergone several transformations over the centuries.
Current currency in circulation
Currently, the official currency of Mali is the West African CFA Franc (XOF). This currency, shared by several countries in the region, is pegged to the euro and is issued by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO). The denominations in circulation include banknotes of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10000 CFA francs, as well as coins of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 500 CFA francs.
Predecessor monetary history
Prior to the adoption of the CFA Franc, Mali used various forms of currency. During the Malian Empire (13th-17th centuries), cowrie shells were used as a medium of exchange. Later, under French colonial rule, the French West African Franc was introduced. After independence in 1960, Mali briefly issued its own currency, the Mali Franc, before joining the CFA Franc zone in 1984, marking a significant milestone in its numismatic history.
