Maltese Lira Coin List

The Maltese Lira was the official currency of Malta from 1825 until 2008, when it was replaced by the Euro. During this period, the lira reflected the rich history and culture of the Mediterranean island through its various designs and denominations.

History and evolution of the Maltese Lira

The Maltese Lira was introduced in 1825, replacing the Maltese Escuda at a ratio of 1:12. Initially, the lira was pegged to the British pound sterling, reflecting Britain's colonial influence in Malta. Over the years, the currency underwent several changes in its design and composition. In 1972, Malta adopted the decimal system, dividing the lira into 100 hundredths and 1000 mils. Coins from this period featured motifs celebrating Maltese heritage, including the national coat of arms, the Maltese Cross and historical figures such as Grand Master Jean de la Valette.

Emblematic coins and the transition to the euro

Among the most emblematic Maltese Lira coins were the 1 lira pieces, which often featured commemorative designs, and the 25 cent coins, which depicted the megalithic temple of Mnajdra. In the years leading up to the adoption of the euro, Malta issued a number of commemorative coins, including silver and gold pieces, to celebrate important events and aspects of Maltese culture. The transition to the euro began on January 1, 2008, marking the end of the Maltese Lira era. For a brief period of dual circulation, both the lira and the euro were legal tender, allowing for a smooth transition to the new European currency.
