Namibia Coins

The official currency of Namibia is the Namibian dollar, introduced in 1993 following the country's independence. This monetary system has a fascinating history and unique characteristics that reflect the nation's identity and economic development.

Monetary history

Prior to independence, Namibia used the South African rand as its official currency. After its separation from South Africa in 1990, the country began planning its own monetary system. The Namibian dollar was introduced in 1993, initially at par with the rand. Since then, both currencies have circulated in parallel in Namibia, although the Namibian dollar is not legal tender in South Africa.

Highlights of Namibian numismatics

Namibian numismatics is noted for its commemorative coins that celebrate the country's wildlife and culture. In 2010, Namibia issued a series of silver coins to commemorate its 20th anniversary of independence. In addition, in 2018, the Bank of Namibia launched a new family of banknotes with enhanced security features and designs depicting important historical figures and the country's biodiversity, reflecting its natural and cultural heritage.
