Nauru Coins

The official currency of Nauru is the Australian dollar, adopted in 1968 after the country's independence. Despite not having its own currency, Nauru has issued commemorative and collector coins over the years, contributing to its numismatic history.

Monetary History

Before adopting the Australian dollar, Nauru used the Australian pound as its official currency. During the Japanese occupation in World War II, the Japanese yen was temporarily introduced. After the war, the Australian pound was resumed until the transition to the Australian dollar in 1966, which became the official currency of Nauru two years later.

Numismatic milestones

Nauru has issued several commemorative coins over the years, most notably the series dedicated to sporting events and marine themes. In 1993, a $10,000 gold coin was minted to commemorate the 25th anniversary of independence, being one of the highest face value coins issued by the country. In addition, Nauru has participated in international numismatic programs, such as the South Pacific coin series, contributing to its recognition in the world of numismatic collecting.
