Netherlands East Indies Coins
The monetary history of the Dutch East Indies is fascinating and reflects the political and economic changes in the region. From the 17th century to the mid-20th century, this Dutch colony underwent several transformations in its monetary system, leaving a rich and varied numismatic legacy.
Coins and banknotes in circulation
For much of its history, the Dutch East Indies used the Dutch guilder as its official currency. It was divided into 100 cents and issued in the form of coins and banknotes. The most common coins included denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 25 cents, as well as 1/4, 1/2 and 1 guilder. Banknotes, meanwhile, were issued in higher denominations, such as 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 500 guilders. An important milestone was the introduction of the 5-cent nickel coin in 1913, which replaced the previous copper coins.
Relevant historical and numismatic events
World War II marked a turning point in the region's monetary history. During the Japanese occupation (1942-1945), the occupation gulden was introduced and circulated alongside the existing currency. After the war, emergency money was issued due to cash shortages. In 1949, with the independence of Indonesia, the Dutch guilder was replaced by the Indonesian rupiah. A notable numismatic event was the minting of 2 1/2 guilder commemorative silver coins in 1943 in the United States, known as the"exile coins," which never circulated in the colony.
