New Caledonia Coins
The numismatics of New Caledonia reflect the rich history and unique status of this French overseas territory in the South Pacific. From its earliest coins to the present day, New Caledonia's monetary system has undergone several changes, adapting to colonial influences and local economic needs.
Current currency in circulation
Currently, the official currency of New Caledonia is the CFP franc (Pacific Franc), which it shares with French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna. Introduced in 1945, the CFP franc is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate of 1 euro = 119.33 CFP francs. Coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 2, 5, 5, 10, 20, 20, 50 and 100 francs, each with designs depicting the local flora, fauna and culture of New Caledonia.
Monetary history and highlights
Prior to the CFP franc, New Caledonia used several currencies, including the French franc and local coins issued by private banks. An important milestone in New Caledonian numismatics was the issuance of nickel tokens in 1922, used in the island's mines and circulated as de facto currency. In addition, during World War II, emergency bills known as "bons de caisse" were issued, which are now highly sought-after collector's items for numismatists interested in the monetary history of the Pacific.
