Paraguay Coins
The official currency of Paraguay is the guaraní, which was introduced in 1943 to replace the Paraguayan peso. Throughout its history, Paraguay has undergone several changes in its monetary system, reflecting the economic and political evolution of the country.
Current currency in circulation
The guaraní is divided into 100 céntimos, although due to inflation, cent coins are no longer used. Currently, coins of 50, 100, 500 and 1000 guaraníes are in circulation, as well as larger denomination banknotes. The Central Bank of Paraguay is responsible for the issuance and regulation of the national currency, maintaining its stability and value in the international market.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Before the guaraní, Paraguay used several currencies, including the peso fuerte and the peso papel during the 19th century. An important milestone in Paraguayan numismatics was the issuance of the first commemorative coin in 1944, celebrating the 400th anniversary of the founding of Asunción. Since then, Paraguay has issued numerous commemorative coins, highlighting historical, cultural and sporting events, which has significantly enriched its numismatic heritage.
