Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Coins

St. Vincent and the Grenadines, an island country in the Caribbean, has an interesting numismatic history. Since its independence in 1979, the country has undergone significant changes in its monetary system, reflecting its economic and political evolution.

Current currency in circulation

St. Vincent and the Grenadines currently uses the Eastern Caribbean dollar as its official currency. This currency, issued by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, is shared by several countries in the region. The Eastern Caribbean dollar is divided into 100 cents and is pegged to the U.S. dollar at a fixed rate of 2.70 Eastern Caribbean dollars to 1 U.S. dollar since 1976.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Prior to the adoption of the East Caribbean dollar, St. Vincent used several currencies, including the British West Indies dollar and, previously, the British pound sterling. An important milestone in St. Vincent's numismatics was the issuance of its first commemorative coins in 1979, celebrating its independence. Since then, the country has issued several commemorative coins, many of which highlight the island's rich flora and fauna, as well as significant historical events, making them coveted by collectors around the world.
