Slovenská Koruna (1993-2008) Coin List
The Slovenská Koruna was the official currency of Slovakia from its independence in 1993 until the adoption of the euro in 2008. During this period, the Slovak currency underwent significant evolution, reflecting the country's transition to a market economy and its integration into the European Union.
Introduction and first issues
Following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, Slovakia established its own currency, the Koruna, on February 8, 1993. The first coins minted were of 10, 20 and 50 halierov, as well as 1, 2, 5 and 10 korunas. These pieces featured designs reflecting Slovak national identity, including symbols such as the country's coat of arms, the double cross on three hills, and important historical figures. Production of these coins took place at the Kremnica Mint, one of the oldest continuously operating mints in the world.
Evolution and preparation for the euro
Over the years, the Slovenská Koruna underwent several modifications in its design and composition. In 1996, a new series of coins with values of 50 halierov and 1, 2, 5 and 10 koruna was introduced, featuring an updated design and improved security measures. As Slovakia prepared to join the European Union, the National Bank of Slovakia began planning for the transition to the euro. In the years leading up to 2008, gradual changes to the currencies were implemented to facilitate the future conversion. The last issue of the Slovenská Koruna included a commemorative 20 koruna coin in 2008, which marked the end of this monetary era and celebrated the upcoming adoption of the euro as Slovakia's official currency.
