Slovakia Coins

Slovakia, as a member of the European Union, has used the euro as its official currency since 2009. However, its monetary and numismatic history is rich and fascinating, reflecting the country's political and economic changes over time.

The Slovak koruna: predecessor of the euro

Before adopting the euro, Slovakia used the Slovak koruna as its national currency. Introduced in 1993 after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the Slovak koruna was the official currency until 2008. During this period, the country issued a variety of coins and banknotes reflecting Slovak culture and history, including commemorative issues celebrating important events and historical figures.

Numismatic milestones in Slovakia

Slovak numismatics has experienced several significant milestones. One of the most notable was the minting of the first Slovak euro coin in 2008, marking the country's transition to the eurozone. In addition, Slovakia has produced commemorative euro coins of great collector value, such as the 2009 €2 coin commemorating the 20th anniversary of Freedom and Democracy Day, highlighting the importance of the country's recent history in its numismatics.
