The Syrian pound (SYP) is the official currency of Syria today. It is divided into 100 piastres and is available in banknotes and coins. Banknotes in circulation include denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 Syrian pounds, while coins are minted in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 25 pounds. Due to economic and political instability in the country, the value of the Syrian pound has experienced significant depreciation in recent years.

Prior to the introduction of the Syrian pound, the country used a variety of currencies, including the Byzantine gold dinar and the Islamic silver dirham. During the Ottoman period, Syria adopted the Turkish piastre. An important milestone in Syrian numismatics was the minting of the first national coins in 1921, shortly after the country's independence. In 1947, Syria joined the International Monetary Fund, marking its integration into the global financial system.
