Togo Coins
The official currency of Togo is the West African CFA franc, a currency shared by several countries in the region. This monetary system has its roots in the colonial and post-colonial history of West Africa, and has undergone several changes over the years.
Monetary history of Togo
Prior to the adoption of the CFA franc, Togo used several currencies throughout its history. During the German colonial period (1884-1914), the German mark was used. Later, under the French mandate, the French franc was introduced. In 1945, Togo adopted the CFA franc, which initially stood for "Franc des Colonies Français d'Afrique". After independence in 1960, the meaning changed to "African Financial Community".
Numismatic milestones in Togo
Togolese numismatics has had several highlights. In 1924, the first Togo-specific coins were issued under the French mandate. An important milestone was the introduction of the CFA franc coins in 1948, which marked the beginning of a new monetary era. In recent years, Togo has participated in the issuance of commemorative coins along with other countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union, celebrating significant historical and cultural events in the region.
