Turkmenistan Coins

The official currency of Turkmenistan is the Turkmen manat, introduced in 1993 after the country's independence. Turkmenistan's numismatics reflect its rich history and evolution as an independent nation.

Current coinage and circulation

The current Turkmen manat was introduced in 2009, replacing the previous manat at a ratio of 5000 to 1. This new currency is divided into 100 tenge and circulates in 1, 5, 10, 20, 20, 50 and 100 manat bills, as well as 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 tenge coins. The banknote designs feature important historical figures and national monuments, reflecting the country's culture and heritage.

Monetary history and numismatic milestones

Prior to independence, Turkmenistan used the Soviet ruble. After its separation from the USSR, the country introduced its first independent currency in 1993. An important milestone in Turkmen numismatics was the issuance of commemorative gold and silver coins in 1996, celebrating the fifth anniversary of independence. These pieces, along with other special issues such as those dedicated to Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality, are highly valued by international collectors.
