Uzbekistan Coins
The official currency of Uzbekistan is the Uzbek som, introduced in 1994 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The current monetary system consists of banknotes and coins, with denominations ranging from 1 som to 100,000 som. Uzbek numismatics reflect the country's rich history and culture, with designs often featuring historical figures and national monuments.
Monetary history
Prior to independence in 1991, Uzbekistan used the Soviet ruble. After the dissolution of the USSR, the country temporarily adopted the som-coupon in 1993 as a transitional measure. In 1994, the Uzbek som was officially introduced, marking an important milestone in the country's economic sovereignty. Since then, the Central Bank of Uzbekistan has issued several series of banknotes and coins, regularly updating their designs and security measures.
Numismatic milestones
Uzbekistan has issued numerous commemorative coins celebrating important events and cultural figures. Among the most notable milestones is the series of gold and silver coins issued in 1996 to commemorate the 660th birthday of Amir Timur, a historical Uzbek leader. In addition, the country has produced coins commemorating the Silk Road, highlighting its historical importance in international trade. In 2018, Uzbekistan introduced new high-denomination banknotes, including the 100,000 som, reflecting the country's economic changes.
