Lire Coin List

The Vatican Lira was the official currency of the Vatican City State from 1929 to 2002. During this period, the Vatican minted a series of coins that reflected its rich history and religious tradition, becoming coveted by collectors around the world.

History and evolution of the Vatican Lira

The Vatican Lira was introduced in 1929, following the signing of the Lateran Pacts between the Holy See and Italy. Initially, Vatican coins were minted at the Italian Mint and maintained a 1:1 parity with the Italian Lira. Over the years, several series of coins were issued, each with unique designs depicting religious figures, popes and Christian symbols. Among the most notable issues were the Holy Year commemorative coins, which were minted every 25 years, and the annual series that changed with each new pontiff.

Characteristics and designs of Vatican coins

The Vatican Lira coins were characterized by their high mintage quality and artistic designs. The most common denominations included 1, 2, 5, 5, 10, 20, 20, 50, 100 and 500 lire, although coins of higher value were also issued for special occasions. The obverse of the coins generally featured the portrait of the reigning pope, while the reverse showed various religious or historical motifs. Some of the most recurrent images included St. Peter's Basilica, the papal coat of arms and allegories of Christian virtues. The last series of Vatican Lire was minted in 2001, before the transition to the euro in 2002, marking the end of a numismatic era that lasted more than seven decades.
