Denmark Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in Denmark is fascinating and reflects the economic and cultural evolution of the Nordic country. From its earliest issues to today's modern banknotes, the Danish krone has undergone numerous changes in design and security features.

Current banknotes in circulation

The Danish banknotes in circulation belong to the series introduced between 2009 and 2011. This series features themes related to bridges and ancient places in Denmark. The denominations are in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, 500 and 1000 kronor, each with a distinctive color and advanced security features such as holograms, security threads and watermarks. The design was created by artist Karin Birgitte Lund, incorporating modern and traditional elements of Danish culture.

Historical banknotes and milestones

The first Danish banknotes were issued in 1713 by a private entity, but the National Bank of Denmark took over this responsibility in 1818. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, designs evolved to reflect history and national identity. An important milestone was the introduction of the krone as the unit of currency in 1873, replacing the rigsdaler. During World War II, Denmark issued emergency banknotes, and in the postwar period, new series with improved security and design were introduced. The series before the current one, launched in the 1990s, featured prominent figures of Danish culture such as Hans Christian Andersen and physicist Niels Bohr.
