Olaf V (1958-1991) Coin List

The reign of Olaf V of Norway, which lasted from 1958 to 1991, was a period of stability and progress for the Scandinavian country. During his rule, Norway underwent significant economic and social changes, reflected in part in the coins minted during this time. The Norwegian monetary system evolved significantly under the reign of Olaf V, adapting to the changing needs of society and the economy.

Economic and monetary evolution

During the reign of Olaf V, Norway was transformed into an oil power, which had a direct impact on its economy and thus its monetary system. The Norwegian krone strengthened considerably on the international market, which was reflected in the design and composition of the coins. In 1963, a new series of coins was introduced that included denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 25 øre, as well as 1 and 5 kroner. These coins featured the profile of King Olaf V on the obverse, while the reverse showed various motifs related to Norwegian history and culture. The 1974 1-krone coin is particularly notable, as it commemorated the 25th anniversary of Olaf V's reign.

Social and numismatic changes

The long reign of Olaf V also saw important social changes that were reflected in numismatics. In 1982, a new 10-kroner coin was introduced, representing a significant step in the modernization of the Norwegian monetary system. This larger, higher-value coin responded to the country's growing prosperity and the need for higher denominations for everyday transactions. In addition, the coins minted during this period are a testament to the evolution of Norwegian numismatic design. A gradual transition from more traditional designs to more modern and stylized representations of national symbols is observed. The last series of coins issued under the reign of Olaf V, in 1989, featured an updated design that reflected contemporary Norway, while maintaining elements of its rich cultural and historical heritage.
