The design of the coins and banknotes has been updated several times, with the latest series of banknotes launched between 2017 and 2019, featuring maritime themes in their designs.

Prior to the krone, Norway used several coins, including the speciedaler and rigsdaler. An important milestone in Norwegian numismatics was the Scandinavian monetary union of 1873, which led to the adoption of the krone. During World War II, Norway issued zinc coins due to metal shortages. In 2012, the Bank of Norway announced that it would stop producing 50 øre coins, with the lowest denomination in circulation since then being the 1 krone coin.
