Nicaragua Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in Nicaragua is a fascinating journey through the economic and cultural evolution of the country. From the first issues to the current banknotes, Nicaraguan banknotes reflect the political, social and artistic changes that the Central American nation has undergone over the years.

Current banknotes in circulation

Nicaragua currently uses the córdoba as its official currency. The banknotes in circulation belong to the C series, issued as of 2009. This series includes denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 córdobas. Each banknote features designs that honor Nicaraguan history and culture, such as the Cathedral of Leon on the 20 Cordobas bill or the Momotombo volcano on the 50 Cordobas note. The banknotes are manufactured with modern security features to prevent counterfeiting.

Historical banknotes and relevant facts

The first Nicaraguan banknotes were issued in 1878 by the Banco de Nicaragua. Throughout its history, the country has experienced several changes in its currency, including the introduction of the córdoba in 1912, replacing the peso. An important milestone was the hyperinflation of the 1980s, which led to the issuance of high denomination banknotes, such as the 500,000 córdoba in 1985. In 1988, a monetary reform was implemented that introduced the "córdoba oro", followed by another in 1991 that established the current córdoba. These changes reflect Nicaragua's turbulent economic history and its struggle for monetary stability.
