Philippines Coins

Philippine numismatics offers a fascinating window into the history and culture of the archipelago. From its earliest mintages to the current coinage, the Philippine peso has undergone numerous changes that reflect the country's political and economic evolution.

Current currency in circulation

The Philippine peso (PHP) has been the official currency of the Philippines since 1852. Currently, coins circulate in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 20 pesos, as well as 1, 5, 10 and 25 cents. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 pesos. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas is responsible for the issuance and regulation of the currency, ensuring its stability and value in the national economy.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Prior to the peso, the Philippines used various currencies, including the Spanish real de a ocho during the colonial era. In 1903, under US rule, the Philippine-US peso was introduced. An important milestone was the creation of the Central Bank of the Philippines in 1949, which assumed responsibility for issuing currency. In 1967, the symbol "₱" was adopted for the peso. The "Ang Bagong Lipunan" series of banknotes issued during the Marcos era and the recent "New Generation Currency" series launched in 2010 represent significant moments in Philippine numismatics.
