Peru Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in Peru is a fascinating journey through the country's economic and cultural evolution. From the first issues to the modern banknotes in circulation today, Peruvian banknotes reflect the historical changes and progress of the nation.

Current banknotes in circulation

The current Peruvian banknotes belong to the family called "Personages and Monuments of Peru". Issued by the Central Reserve Bank of Peru, they include denominations of 10, 20, 50, 50, 100 and 200 soles. Each banknote features an important historical figure on the obverse, such as José Abelardo Quiñones, Raúl Porras Barrenechea and María Reiche, accompanied by significant monuments or archeological sites on the reverse, such as Chan Chan and the Nazca Lines.

Historical banknotes and relevant landmarks

Among Peru's most notable historical banknotes are those of the old "Inti", a currency that circulated between 1985 and 1991 during a period of hyperinflation. An important milestone in Peruvian banknotes was the introduction of the "Nuevo Sol" in 1991, which replaced the Inti at a rate of 1 million to 1. This change marked the beginning of a new era of monetary stability. Other historic banknotes include the "Soles de Oro", used from 1931 to 1985, which reflected the country's cultural and natural wealth with designs that included Inca motifs and Peruvian landscapes.
