Currency during the colonial period
During Belgian rule, the Congo used the Congolese franc, introduced in 1887. This currency was pegged to the Belgian franc and various series of banknotes and coins were issued. Banknotes of this era often depicted scenes of colonial life and portraits of Belgian royalty.
Post-independence currency changes

In 1997, due to hyperinflation, the Congolese franc was reintroduced and remains the official currency to this day.
