Segundo Cruceiro (1970-1986) Coin List
The Segundo Cruceiro was the official currency of Brazil from 1970 to 1986, a period marked by important economic and political changes in the country. This monetary unit was introduced to replace the First Cruceiro, which had suffered a significant devaluation due to high inflation.
Characteristics and design of the coins
The coins of the Second Cruceiro were characterized by their diversity in denominations and designs. Pieces of 1, 5, 10, 10, 20 and 50 centavos were minted, as well as 1 and 2 cruceiros. The designs of these coins reflected elements of Brazilian culture and history, including figures such as the politician and diplomat Barão do Rio Branco on the 1 cruceiro coin, and the explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral on the 20 centavo coin. In addition, national symbols such as the Brazilian coat of arms and representations of the country's flora and fauna were used, such as the ipê flower on the 2 cruceiros coin.
Economic context and the end of the Second Cruceiro
During the period of the Segundo Cruceiro, Brazil experienced a time of rapid economic growth known as the "Brazilian Economic Miracle," but also faced significant challenges such as the 1973 oil crisis and rising inflation. As the 1980s progressed, inflation became uncontrollable, leading to the introduction of higher denominations, including coins of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cruceiros. Finally, in 1986, the government implemented the Cruzado Plan, which replaced the Segundo Cruceiro with a new currency, the Cruzado, in an attempt to control inflation and stabilize the economy. This change marked the end of a turbulent era in Brazil's monetary history.
