Crusader New (1989-1990) Coin List
The Cruzado Nuevo was the official currency of Brazil from January 16, 1989 until March 15, 1990. This brief but significant stage in Brazilian monetary history was marked by intense efforts to combat the hyperinflation that was sweeping the country at the time.
Historical and economic context
The Cruzado Novo was introduced as part of the Summer Plan, a series of economic measures implemented by the government of President José Sarney. This plan sought to curb the rampant inflation that had reached alarming levels during the Cruzado era. The new currency was established with a conversion rate of 1,000 cruzados for 1 new cruzado, which represented a drastic currency devaluation. Despite government efforts, inflation continued to be a serious problem, reaching monthly rates of up to 80% during this period.
New Crusader Coins
New Crusader coins were minted in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 50 cents, as well as 1 and 5 new crusaders. These pieces retained the design of the previous Crusader coins, but with the denomination updated. A notable feature was the reintroduction of 1 centavo coins, which had not been minted since the Cruzeiro era due to loss of value due to inflation. The higher denomination coins, such as the 1 and 5 new Cruzeiros, were minted in nickel, while the lower denomination coins were produced in stainless steel. Despite their short life, these coins are pieces of great interest to collectors, as they represent a crucial period in Brazil's economic history.
