Hesse-Homburg Coin List
The Landgraviate of Hesse-Homburg was a small sovereign state of the Holy Roman Empire, located in present-day Germany. It existed from 1622 to 1866, and during this period issued its own coins, which are of great interest to numismatists and historians.
History and government of Hesse-Homburg
Hesse-Homburg originated as a partition of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1622. Ruled by a cadet branch of the House of Hesse, the small state maintained its independence over the centuries, surviving even the mediatization of 1806. The town of Bad Homburg vor der Höhe served as the capital of the landgraviate. Despite its small size, Hesse-Homburg achieved a certain prominence thanks to its dynastic connections and its involvement in European conflicts. The state was finally annexed by Prussia in 1866, following the Austro-Prussian War, ending its existence as an independent entity.
Monetary system and coinage of Hesse-Homburg
The monetary system of Hesse-Homburg reflected the complexity of pre-unification German finance. Hesse-Homburg coins are relatively scarce due to the small size of the state and its limited production. Initially, the landgraviate used the Reichstaler system common in the Holy Roman Empire. Later, it adopted the Gulden system of the Confederation of the Rhine. Among the most notable issues were the silver Kreuzer and the copper Pfennig, which often bore the coat of arms of the House of Hesse or the portrait of the reigning Landgrave. These coins are highly valued by collectors because of their rarity and historical significance as a testament to Germany's political fragmentation prior to unification.
