Libya Coin List

The official currency of Libya is the Libyan dinar, which is divided into 1000 dirhams. Libyan numismatics reflect the country's rich history and political changes over the years, from the time of the Ottoman Empire to the present day.

Current currency in circulation

The Libyan dinar was introduced in 1971, replacing the Libyan pound. Currently, coins of 50 and 100 dirhams are in circulation, as well as banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 dinars. The design of the coins and banknotes has changed several times, reflecting the different political regimes that have ruled the country, including the Muammar Qaddafi era and the post-revolution period of 2011.

Monetary history and highlights

Prior to independence in 1951, Libya used a variety of currencies, including the Ottoman piastra and the Italian lira. An important milestone in Libyan numismatics was the issuance of commemorative gold coins in 1952 to celebrate the country's independence. During the Qaddafi regime, coins and banknotes were issued with his effigy, which were withdrawn after his fall in 2011. Recent political instability has led to the circulation of different versions of the dinar in different parts of the country, reflecting the current complex political situation in Libya.
