Liechtenstein Coin List

Liechtenstein, a small European principality, has a unique numismatic history. Despite its size, the country has managed to maintain its own monetary identity, although closely linked to its neighbors.

Current currency and monetary arrangements

Liechtenstein currently uses the Swiss franc as its official currency. This is due to a monetary agreement with Switzerland dating back to 1920. Although it is not a member of the European Union, Liechtenstein has a special agreement that allows it to mint a limited amount of euros for collectors, without these coins being legal tender in the country.

Monetary and numismatic history

Before adopting the Swiss franc, Liechtenstein used several currencies throughout its history. During the 19th century, the country used the South German guilder. In 1898, Liechtenstein briefly adopted the Austro-Hungarian krone, which it used until the end of the First World War. An important milestone in Liechtenstein numismatics was the issuance of its first commemorative coins in 1898, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Principality, a tradition that continues to this day with special issues that are highly prized by collectors.
