Mariana Islands Coin List

The Northern Mariana Islands, an unincorporated territory of the United States, use the U.S. dollar as their official currency. This monetary situation reflects the close political and economic relationship between the islands and the continental United States.

Monetary History

Prior to the adoption of the U.S. dollar, the Mariana Islands had a diverse monetary history. During the period of Spanish colonization, Spanish coins were used. Later, under German and Japanese rule, the German mark and Japanese yen circulated, respectively. After World War II, the U.S. administration introduced the dollar, which has remained the official currency ever since.

Numismatics in the Mariana Islands

Although the Mariana Islands does not issue its own currency, there have been commemorative issues related to the archipelago. In 2009, as part of the U.S. Territories Quarter Dollar series, a special coin was minted for the Northern Mariana Islands. This coin features on its reverse a limpet, a traditional sailing ship and two latte stones, important symbols of Chamorro culture, along with the inscription "E Pluribus Unum" and the islands' motto, "Olomwaay."
