Marshall Islands Coin List

The Marshall Islands currently uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency. This Pacific archipelago has an interesting monetary and numismatic history that reflects its colonial past and later independence.

Monetary History

Prior to adopting the U.S. dollar, the Marshall Islands used a variety of currencies throughout its history. During the German colonial period (1885-1914), the German mark circulated. Later, under Japanese rule (1914-1944), the yen was used. After World War II, when the islands became a trust territory of the United States, the U.S. dollar was introduced and has remained the official currency ever since.

Numismatics in the Marshall Islands

Although the Marshall Islands does not issue its own currency for general circulation, the country has produced commemorative coins since its independence in 1986. These pieces, minted primarily for collectors, often commemorate significant historical events or highlight the region's rich marine biodiversity. An important milestone in Marshallese numismatics was the 1989 issuance of a series of coins commemorating the 10th anniversary of its incorporation, which included silver and gold pieces with designs depicting cultural and natural elements of the islands.
