Initially, South Vietnam used the French Indochina piastra, inherited from the colonial period. In 1953, the South Vietnamese đồng was introduced and became the country's official currency. The đồng was divided into 100 xu and both coins and banknotes were issued. Coin denominations included 10, 20 and 50 xu, while banknotes were issued in values from 1 đồng to 1000 đồng.
Significant changes and events.
An important milestone in South Vietnamese numismatics was the 1966 currency reform, which introduced a new đồng with a different value. This reform sought to combat inflation and stabilize the economy. Another relevant event was the issuance of commemorative coins in 1970 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Emperor Bảo Đại's reign. The numismatics of South Vietnam came to an end with the fall of Saigon in 1975, when the North Vietnamese đồng became the official currency of the entire reunified country.
