Finland Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in Finland is fascinating and reflects the economic and cultural evolution of the Nordic country. From its first banknotes to the adoption of the euro, Finland has undergone significant changes in its currency over the years.

Old Finnish banknotes

The first Finnish banknotes were issued in 1860 by the Bank of Finland, denominated in Finnish marks. Throughout the 20th century, Finland issued several series of banknotes, most notably the 1955 series featuring designs inspired by Finnish nature and culture. One of the most emblematic banknotes was the 500 Mark, which depicted the composer Jean Sibelius, Finland's national symbol.

Current banknotes in circulation

Since 2002, Finland has used the euro as its official currency. The euro banknotes in circulation are identical in all eurozone countries, with designs depicting European architectural styles. However, Finland maintains its identity on the euro coins, where the reverse shows national symbols such as the Finnish heraldic lion or the flying swan, designed by artist Pertti Mäkinen.
