Germany-Democratic Republic Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) is a fascinating reflection of the political and economic changes the country experienced during its existence. From its founding in 1949 until German reunification in 1990, the GDR issued a variety of banknotes representing its national identity and socialist values.

Old GDR banknotes

The first GDR banknotes were issued in 1948, even before the official founding of the country. These banknotes, known as "Deutsche Mark der Deutschen Notenbank", featured simple designs with industrial and agricultural motifs. In 1964, a new series of banknotes called "Mark der Deutschen Notenbank" was introduced, highlighting important historical figures such as Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. These banknotes were characterized by their colorfulness and included more advanced security features.

Last banknotes and reunification

The last series of GDR banknotes was issued in 1985, known as "Mark der DDR". These banknotes featured a more modern and sophisticated design, with portraits of prominent personalities from German history and scenes depicting socialist progress. However, with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the subsequent German reunification, these banknotes ceased to circulate. In 1990, the monetary union between the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany was implemented, replacing the GDR Mark with the West German Deutsche Mark, marking the end of an era in German numismatic history.
