Current banknotes in circulation
North Korea' s current banknotes are denominated in North Korean won and were introduced in 2009. This series includes denominations of 5, 10, 50, 50, 100, 200, 500, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 won. The designs feature iconic images of the country, such as Mount Paektu, Kim Il-sung's birthplace in Mangyongdae and Pyongyang's Arc de Triomphe. A notable feature is the absence of portraits of living leaders on current banknotes.
Old banknotes and relevant facts
Prior to 2009, North Korea used several series of banknotes. The 1992 series was particularly significant, as it included Kim Il-sung's portrait on the highest denomination banknotes for the first time. In 2002, a major currency reform took place that drastically devalued the currency, causing economic hardship for the population. Old banknotes often reflected the Juche ideology and propaganda of the regime, with images of workers, soldiers and the country's industrial achievements.
