American Samoa Coins

The official currency of American Samoa is the U.S. dollar. This unincorporated territory of the United States uses the same currency as the mainland, reflecting its close political and economic relationship with the American nation.

Currency History

Prior to the adoption of the U.S. dollar, American Samoa used the Samoan tala, the currency of neighboring independent Samoa. The transition to the dollar occurred in 1899, when the United States formally acquired control of the territory. Since then, the dollar has been the sole legal tender in American Samoa, facilitating trade and transactions with the United States and other territories using this currency.

Numismatic Highlights

Although American Samoa does not issue its own currency, it has been represented in some special numismatic issues. In 2009, as part of the U.S. Territories Quarter Dollar program, a commemorative 25-cent coin dedicated to American Samoa was minted. This coin features traditional Samoan symbols on its reverse side, including an ava bowl, a speaker's baton and a palm tree, elements that reflect the territory's rich culture and history.
