Belgian Congo Coins

The monetary history of the Belgian Congo is fascinating and reflects the political and economic changes in the region. From its time as a Belgian colony to its independence, the Congo has undergone several transformations in its monetary system, leaving a rich and varied numismatic legacy.

Currency during the colonial period

During Belgian rule, the Congo used the Congolese franc, introduced in 1887. This currency was pegged to the Belgian franc and various series of banknotes and coins were issued. Of particular note were copper-nickel coins with designs depicting local fauna, such as elephants and lions. Banknotes of this era often depicted scenes of colonial life and portraits of Belgian royalty.

Post-independence currency changes

After independence in 1960, the country initially kept the Congolese franc, but in 1967 the zaïre was introduced as the new national currency. This change marked an important milestone in Congolese numismatics. New series of coins and banknotes were issued with designs reflecting the culture and national identity of the independent Congo. In 1997, due to hyperinflation, the Congolese franc was reintroduced and remains the official currency to this day.
