Cambodia Coins
Cambodia's official currency is the Cambodian riel, which was introduced in 1980 after years of currency instability. The current monetary system coexists with the widespread use of the U.S. dollar in the country, reflecting Cambodia's complex economic history.
Current currency in circulation
The Cambodian riel is divided into 100 sen, although sen coins are no longer used in practice. Banknotes in circulation include denominations of 100, 500, 1000, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, 20000, 50000 and 100000 riel. The National Bank of Cambodia is responsible for issuing and regulating the currency, working to maintain its stability in a challenging economic environment.
Currency history and relevant facts
Prior to the current riel, Cambodia used several currencies, including the French Indochina franc during the colonial period. During the Khmer Rouge regime (1975-1979), money was abolished completely. An important milestone in Cambodian numismatics was the reintroduction of the riel in 1980, marking the beginning of the country's economic recovery. Since then, banknote design has evolved to reflect Cambodia's culture and history, with images of ancient temples such as Angkor Wat and portraits of national leaders.
