Colombia Coins

Colombia's official currency is the Colombian peso, which has been the country's monetary unit since 1810. Throughout its history, Colombia has undergone several changes in its monetary system, reflecting the economic and political evolution of the nation. Colombian numismatics offers a fascinating journey through time, showcasing the country's rich history and culture.

Current currency in circulation

The current Colombian peso is divided into 100 cents and is represented by the symbol "$" or "COP". Coins in circulation include denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 pesos. These coins feature designs that honor Colombian biodiversity and important historical figures. Banknotes, meanwhile, come in denominations of 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, 20000, 50000 and 100000 pesos, and highlight cultural and natural elements of the country.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Before the peso, Colombia used the Spanish real and then the gold peso. An important milestone was the creation of the Banco de la República in 1923, which took control of monetary issuance. In 1931, Colombia abandoned the gold standard, and in 1993 a major monetary reform was implemented that eliminated three zeros from the peso. Colombian numismatics include unique pieces such as the 1622 gold ounce, minted during the colonial period, and the commemorative coins of the Bicentennial of Independence issued in 2010, which are highly valued by collectors.
