Fiji Coins

The official currency of Fiji is the Fijian dollar, which is divided into 100 cents. Introduced in 1969, the Fijian dollar has been the currency in circulation since the country's independence. Fiji's numismatics reflect its rich history and its transition from British colony to independent nation.

Monetary history

Prior to the introduction of the Fijian dollar, Fiji used the Fijian pound, which was pegged to the British pound sterling. This monetary system was in effect from 1873 to 1969. During this period, Fiji also experimented with issuing its own coins, including the famous 1865 "thakombau" coins, minted during the reign of King Cakobau, which are now highly coveted collector's items.

Numismatic milestones

Fiji's numismatics has seen several important milestones. In 1934, Fiji's first commemorative coin was issued, celebrating the 60th anniversary of Fiji's cession to Great Britain. More recently, Fiji has gained recognition for its innovative collector coins, including themed series on local flora and fauna, as well as coins with unique designs such as the titanium circular coin issued in 2013 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Fiji's independence.
