Hesse-Kassel Coin List

The Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel, also known as Hesse-Cassel, was an important state of the Holy Roman Empire that existed from 1567 to 1806. During this period, Hesse-Kassel was noted for its unique monetary system and distinctive coinage, which reflected the wealth and power of this German territory.

History and political context

Hesse-Kassel emerged as a result of the division of the Landgraviate of Hesse after the death of Philip I in 1567. Under the leadership of the Landgraves, the state became a significant regional power, known for its professional army and its involvement in European conflicts. The Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) had a profound impact on Hesse-Kassel, affecting its economy and thus its monetary system. However, the state managed to recover and prosper, especially during the reign of Charles I (1670-1730), who implemented crucial economic and monetary reforms.

Monetary system and notable coinages

The monetary system of Hesse-Kassel was mainly based on the Reichstaler and its subdivisions, although it also minted gold coins such as the Goldgulden. One of the most famous issues was the "Judenkopftaler" or "Jewish head taler", minted in 1622, which featured a stylized portrait considered anti-Semitic. Hesse-Kassel coins often featured the coat of arms of the landgraviate, which included a lion rampant, as well as portraits of the rulers. During the 18th century, the Kassel mint produced high-quality coins, including convention thalers, which conformed to the standards of the Lower Saxony Circle. The numismatics of Hesse-Kassel reflect not only its political history, but also the artistic and economic trends of the time, making it a fascinating object of study for collectors and historians.
