Guinea Coins

The official currency of Guinea is the Guinean franc, which was introduced in 1959 following the country's independence. Throughout its monetary history, Guinea has undergone several changes in its monetary system, reflecting the country's political and economic transformations.

Monetary history of Guinea

Prior to independence, Guinea used the West African CFA franc, a common currency in the French colonies in the region. In 1959, the country decided to abandon the CFA franc and create its own national currency, the Guinean franc, as a symbol of economic sovereignty. Since then, the Guinean franc has undergone several devaluations and changes in its denomination due to the country's economic and political instability.

Numismatic milestones

Among the highlights in Guinean numismatics is the issuance of commemorative coins in 1969 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of independence. In addition, in 1971, Guinea adopted the decimal system for its currency, dividing the franc into 100 centimes. An important milestone was the introduction of polymer banknotes in 2018, starting with the 20,000 franc denomination, marking a significant advance in the security and durability of the national currency.
