Haiti Coins

The official currency of Haiti is the gourde, which is divided into 100 cents. The Haitian monetary system has a rich history that reflects the country's political and economic changes over the years.

Current currency in circulation

The gourde was introduced in 1813 and remains the official currency of Haiti today. Current denominations include coins of 5, 10, 20 and 50 centimes, as well as 1 and 5 gourdes. Banknotes in circulation are 10, 20, 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000 gourdes. The Bank of the Republic of Haiti is responsible for the issuance and regulation of the national currency.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Before the gourde, Haiti used the Haitian peso as its official currency. An important milestone in Haitian numismatics was the issuance of the first independent currency in 1807, shortly after the country gained its independence from France. Throughout its history, Haiti has experienced several changes in its monetary system, including periods of hyperinflation and devaluations. In 1870, the decimal system was adopted for the gourde, facilitating commercial transactions and bringing the currency in line with international standards.
