Prior to the adoption of the lempira, Honduras used several currencies, including the peso and the real during the colonial period. After independence, the country continued to use the peso until 1931, when the lempira was introduced. The name of the coin honors the Lenca chief Lempira, who led the resistance against the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century.
Numismatic Milestones
Among the highlights in Honduran numismatics is the issuance of the first lempira coin in 1931, minted in silver. In 1950, the first cupro-nickel coins were introduced, and in 1993 the first 50 lempira commemorative coin was issued to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. Currently, coins of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, as well as 1 and 5 lempiras, all minted in different metal alloys, are in circulation.
