Ivory Coast Coins
The official currency of Côte d'Ivoire is the West African CFA franc, a currency shared by several countries in the region. This monetary system has a rich history and has undergone several changes over time, reflecting the economic and political evolution of the country.
Current currency and its circulation
The West African CFA franc, issued by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), has been the currency in circulation in Côte d'Ivoire since 1945. Current denominations include coins of 5, 10, 25, 25, 50, 100 and 500 CFA francs, as well as banknotes of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10000 CFA francs. The fixed parity with the euro (1 euro = 655,957 CFA francs) has provided monetary stability to the country.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Prior to the introduction of the CFA franc, Côte d'Ivoire used various currencies, including the French franc during the colonial era. An important milestone in Ivorian numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 1966, celebrating the sixth anniversary of the country's independence. In 1997, a new series of coins was introduced with designs depicting local fauna, such as the elephant and the hippopotamus, reflecting Ivory Coast's cultural and natural identity in its numismatics.
