Katanga Coins

Katanga' s monetary history is brief but fascinating, reflecting the turbulent political events of the region. Following its declaration of independence from the Congo in 1960, Katanga issued its own currency, marking a unique chapter in African numismatics.

The Katanguean currency

The Katanguean franc was the official currency of the State of Katanga during its short existence between 1960 and 1963. Coins were issued in denominations of 1, 5 and 10 francs, as well as banknotes of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 1000 francs. The coins featured traditional Katanguean symbols, such as the Katanga cross, while the banknotes depicted portraits of local leaders and scenes from everyday life.

Numismatic legacy

Although the Katanguean franc had a short life, it has become a coveted item for collectors. The rarity of these coins and banknotes, along with their historical significance, has made them valuable items on the numismatic market. After the reintegration of Katanga to the Congo in 1963, the Congolese franc was returned to use, ending this brief but significant monetary experiment.
