Madeira Coins

Madeira' s monetary history is closely linked to that of Portugal, although with some interesting particularities. As part of Portugal, Madeira has mainly used the Portuguese escudo and later the euro as official currencies, but it has also had its own issues and periods with circulation of other currencies.

Madeira's monetary history

Until the introduction of the euro in 2002, the official currency of Madeira was the Portuguese escudo. However, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, due to the scarcity of Portuguese currency on the island, British currencies such as the pound sterling were widely circulated . This was due to Madeira's strong commercial ties with the United Kingdom, especially for the Madeira wine trade. In 1917, during World War I, Madeira-specific emergency banknotes were issued to alleviate the cash shortage.

Numismatics and special issues

Although Madeira has not had a permanent currency of its own, there have been commemorative and special issues related to the island. In 1980, a 25 escudos coin was minted to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the discovery of Madeira. More recently, already in the euro era, €2 commemorative coins with Madeira motifs have been issued, such as the 2019 coin celebrating the 600th anniversary of the discovery of the island of Porto Santo. These pieces are highly appreciated by collectors and reflect the historical and cultural importance of Madeira in the Portuguese and European context.
